It is situated at the eastern end of the Vale of Glamorgan, near the border of Bridgend County Borough and the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff West. The ground is the most-used in Wales and one of the most in Europe, with over 210,000 matches staged there. The main stand has a capacity of 24,500, with a further 13,000 in the Millennium Stand. The ground has been used for Test matches, European Rugby Champions Cup games, Challenge Cup games and the Welsh-based Heineken Cup, and has also hosted international rugby sevens tournaments. It was one of the venues for the 2015 Rugby World Cup Sevens and the first tournament to feature an open-air pitch. History Construction The original ground was opened in 1892. It had been built to replace Cardiff Arms Park on the Glamorgan Basin as the home ground of the Cardiff RFC, who were looking for a new stadium for their home games. By the time the Welsh Rugby Union was formed in 1895, the Cardiff Arms Park was owned by the local Board of Guardians who leased it back to the Cardiff City Council for £20,000.
